Introduction to Dr. Kessler's MCS 342 Sample Wiki for the 1950-1951 Season

The 1950-1951 television season, and those years in society in general, provided America with a wealth of drama, comedy, and overall newsworthy excitement.  Although the medium was still finding its bearings, the first season of the 1950s reflects the liveness associated with early New York-based television, as well as the generic diversity that would come to be known as part of the American television landscape.  Americans had just caught their breath after ending a major war when President Truman thrust them into a new one.  As a needed source  of relief, television brought into American living rooms—for sheer entertainment or education—varying forms of comedy, drama, enlightenment, and information.  A look over the popular (and less popular) shows of the time through a lens of 1950s social anxiety and technical progress highlights ways in which an era often framed—by later nostalgized media—as idealistic and carefree was actually consumed by issues relating to international conflict, conflict at home, and the potential threats and advantages of scientific discovery.  Although television later presented us with visions of the 1950s as simply full of soda shops and poodle skirts, this wiki highlights the ways in which the social context and televisual landscape were both much more complex.
